Classify each structure according to its functional class. Forparts C and D, also indicate if the group is 1 degree, 2 degree, or3 degree.
You are watching: Classify each structure according to its functional class.
The structures of several molecules are given and the functional groups need to be identified. The groups responsible for the characteristic chemical properties of a molecule are known as functional groups.
Skeletal structure: The skeletal formula represents the bonding of different atoms with each other and shows the basic skeleton of the molecule.
The several groups that a molecule can possess are listed below:
• Alkyl halide: When a halogen is directly attached to carbon atom, then it is known as alkyl halide. They are represented as R-X, where R is an alkyl group and X represents halogen.
• Amine: It is represented as −NH2 – {
m{N}}{{
m{H}}_2}−NH2 .
• Carboxylic acid: It is represented as -COOH. It is shown as follows:
Where R is an alkyl group.
• Amide: It is represented as −CONH2 – {
m{CON}}{{
m{H}}_2}−CONH2 . It is shown below:
Part A.
