This is going to sound like an odd question, but…suppose I've got a flat screen LCD television, which belongs to me. Now, I have situation in which I want to render the TV inoperable, but I don't want to do something crude like put my foot through the screen. I want it to appear as if my TV has just malfunctioned. Bonus points if the condition is reversible, but the TV cost me $100 used, so I don't really care honestly. The story is a little complicated, but suffice it to say, this is the easiest way to resolve a problem I've got and I'm willing to take the $100 hit to avoid any complication.

So, I've got a phillips head screwdriver in hand. Television is unplugged, what would be next? Is there a way I can render the TV inoperable without opening it up, or do I need to go inside and remove a fuse or cut wires etc?
Thanks in advance!

You could disconnect the power supply section inside the TV. With an iron it's easily reversible, with snips it's a little more crude but still easy enough to put back together. What's the story?

Well…it's a little embarassing. Basically I share a large house with two other people. I put this TV in a downstairs room and I now have a situation where the two roommates are forever camped out watching this damn TV. My study is right beside it where I work. I've tried several different approaches, but I'm not getting anywhere. It's my TV so I could simply take it and put it in my room, but I'd rather not deal with the resentment and pouting that would follow.
These two roommates are cheap and lazy. I know them pretty well. If my TV “fails” there is an excellent chance they will spend a lot less time in the room making noise and having inane conversations while I'm trying to work. They will stay up on the second floor (which they have the whole run of) and watch their own TV up there.

I'm pretty confident that they won't bother to buy a replacement TV for the room, because like I said, they are cheap and lazy and will follow the path of least resistance.

So that's my plan. Secretly disable the TV. Then I go “oh gee, the tv's broken. That's a bummer.” and get on with my new nice quiter life on the first floor where I don't have to hear my dopey roomates twit girlfriend watching PITCH PERFECT for the 4th time this week at 11 PM on a weeknight with the volume at 89/100.
So… this power supply section. Where do I look? I assume start with the area where the AC cable connects to the television?
