To spare the rod is to spoil the child is a well known saying who’s advice parents would be, and most often are, wise to follow.
The prompt attempts to promote praise of positive actions while ignoring negative ones. While I agree with the former, It is my opinion that the latter could have negative consequences in children and adults alike for the following reasons.
While positive feedback encourages and in many cases promotes future good behaviour and boosts productivity, failing to point out negative actions could have dire consequences-this is especially true for children who are in the learning and developmental phase of life.
A child learns what is appropriate and inappropriate behaviour not just by praising him when he does something right, but also berating him when he does something wrong; for example, many children do not know that accepting chocolates from strangers is wrong, and a parent that does not correct these actions as soon as they happen, could lead to a child in a dangerous and potentially life threatening situation.
Furthermore, when a person has been praised all his life, he may most likely adopt a superiority complex. This could affect friendships and romantic relationships he engages in, and even dampen his work life, as those affected with a superiority complex do not take negative feedback well, he may lash out when given a negative review when his work is appraised by his boss. While having confidence is a good trait, a superiority complex brought about by an excessive amount of praise would be detrimental to his career.
When a person is not told right from wrong from an early age, the lines between the realms of right and wrong beings to blur, and makes it harder for the person to ascertain as to whether he is doing good or bad. This also makes it harder for the person to make corrections to his behaviour later in life as most behaviours carried over into adulthood tend to be set in stone. This is not to say that amends cannot be made, however they will be much harder to do so in comparison to if these amends were made at an early stage of development.
In conclusion, if the positive actions are not made known and are not praised, a person may not be as motivated to do more positive things in the future. However, highlighting the negative actions of a person are just as important for their growth and development, future success in relationships and their careers, and in many cases, for society as a whole.
