Loveable comedian Jason Segel, recently announced that he was forced to lose weight for his upcoming role in the movie “The Five Year Engagement.” In the film, Segel plays fiance to actress Emily Blunt, and admitted that losing the weight was no light order, dropping more than 30 pounds from his 6’4″ frame.

Segel says the weight loss orders came directly from the film studio president because ‘it had to be conceivable that Emily Blunt would choose me to be her husband, which I thought was far enough.’
On a recent appearance on The David Letterman Show, Segel says he reached his lowest moment being overweight while he was working in New Orleans and indulging in too much food and alcohol. His assistant awoke him one morning from a pile of Taco Bell wrappers and documented the scene with a slough of pictures. “This is me at my worst,” joked Segel, pointing out his large stomach hanging over his pants.
As far as losing the weight goes, Segel says he went about it the old fashioned way. “It’s exactly what you think it is and it’s horrible. You just exercise and eat less and don’t drink very much.”
Segel admitted he didn’t enjoy the process very much, and that he had a personal trainer on set who made him work out twice a day and would also also watch him eat the majority of his meals.
But during his Letterman appearance, said he found a way around that obstacle. “What they didn’t anticipate is that I’m very clever and I play a chef in the movie, so there were a lot of scenes in which I had to eat. So I paid my co-stars phenomenal amounts of money to mess up their lines during the scenes and I’d get to keep eating!”
Segel, who cowrote the film, said he had Blunt in mind for the role of his wife before he ever put pen to paper, since they’ve been good friends for more than five years now. He thought they would have good on-screen chemistry since they’re already best friends in real life.
There are reportedly a fair amount of love scenes and nudity in the film, which Segel jokes is humorous since ‘him being naked on screen and in his personal life is just funny.’ But since slimming down for the role, movie goers may not be laughing at his backside anymore.
You can see Segel in “The Five Year Engagement” in theaters this Friday, April 27.
