Kim Kardashian recently revealed that fat shaming comments from the greater internet community are the real reason she’s stopped smiling in photos. Those comments didn’t stop Kim from stepping out front and center for last night’s MTV VMAs–but neither did they stop a further barrage of fat-shaming criticism.
Kim Kardashian’s comments on the matter addressed both of her pregnancies. Speaking to C magazine, Kim said simply: “It was the worst.” Regarding her first pregnancy, Kim continued: “I couldn’t help it, and everyone would say, ‘She can’t stop eating.’ I delivered at 180, and they were like, ‘She’s 210 pounds.””
As for the physical changes from her first pregnancy, Kim revealed the real-life difficulties she had coping with the public’s expectations of her body: “It really took a toll after the fact, when I was losing weight. I gained 50 pounds, and it’s tough to get it off.”
Unfortunately, Kim Kardashian’s fat-shaming comments did nothing to stop the barrage of similar observations in light of her appearance at last night’s VMAs:

“Before,” Kim Kardashian told C–meaning before North West was born–”I was always smiling, and so into being out and about. After I had the baby, I was like, ‘These are the same people that made fun of me, and posted the stories that were so awful, calling me fat for something I couldn’t control.””
Of course, not all recent attention Kim Kardashian’s gotten has been negative. Hollywood Life‘s article on last night’s VMAs carries the headline “Kim Kardashian struts her growing baby bump at the MTV VMAs.” A Mirror story on Kim Kardashian’s pre-VMA vacation notes “Kim Kardashian hits back at baby weight critics by stunning in bronze bikini on St. Barts beach.” And MTV’s own coverage whips out the superlatives: “Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are the VMAs’ cutest (and most coordinated) couple.”
Still, a quick look at social media paints a far less flattering picture.
UPDATE: Kim has taken to social media for something of a dignified response to all this talk of Kim Kardashian fat shaming. Her two most recent Instagram posts are of the head-held-high variety:
